Complaints about homeless camps in Spring Valley

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — We’ve heard a lot about the problems of the homeless community in San Diego, but the lack of affordable housing is a regional crisis.

We learned about this situation through a viewer’s email. The people in a quiet, well maintained neighborhood in the East County said a nearby canyon is being taken over by the homeless.

Just across the road from well-kept houses in Spring Valley, a canyon fully of tents and tarps and lean-tos have taken over.

The canyon area, East of Highway 54 is privately owned open space. It used to be attractive to hikers, but not anymore.

Monica Cubrero, a resident of Spring Valley, said the garbage and waste left by people camping in the canyon is a growling problem, one that only seems to be getting worse.
