Construction to begin on redevelopment project in Barrio Logan

BARRIO LOGAN (CNS) – Construction will begin next week on a redevelopment project in Barrio Logan that will include a shopping center, grocery story and affordable apartments, Mayor Jerry Sanders announced Thursday.

The Mercado del Barrio project has been delayed by numerous setbacks, but escrow on it closed Thursday, allowing construction to begin, according to the mayor's office. The project is expected to be finished next summer.

The mixed-use development will include a 36,000-square-foot grocery store, 48,000 square feet of shops and restaurants and 92 apartments for people earning 30 to 60 percent of the area's median income.

It will also feature public art, pedestrian walkways and landscaping and plazas that reflect Barrio Logan's culture, according to the Mayor's Office.

San Diego's Redevelopment Agency, the San Diego Housing Commission and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development are cooperating with private firms to build Mercado del Barrio.

“This project is a true win for the Barrio Logan community and all of San Diego,” Sanders said. “It's going to enhance a culturally rich neighborhood, spur small business creation and create jobs for San Diegans.”
