Controversy surrounds transgender student using boys’ locker room
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Staff, parents and students met at a school board meeting in Poway Tuesday night over the issue of a transgender student using the boy’s locker room.
Parents and students have mixed views about a student at Rancho Bernardo High School who was born female, but identifies as male and has been changing in the boy’s locker room.
Some parents are upset, but advocates for transgender rights have started an online petition, saying they do not want the district to segregate transgender students, but instead, give them appropriate privacy.
A state law passed in 2014 requires schools to make accommodations for transgender students and Poway Superintendent John Collins issued a statement, saying the district has tried to abide by the law.
No actions were taken at Tuesday night’s meeting.
