Coronado Islanders 43, San Diego Cavers 6

Balboa stadium housed the match-up between the Coronado Islanders (7-1) and the San Diego Cavers (1-8). The Islanders seek to grasp the Div. 4 Central league championship after defeating the Cavers with a final score of 43-6.

It was a momentous night as the Cavers celebrated senior night and the San Diego High School Alumni Association honored local veterans. In Coronado’s second drive of the night, Bailey Knight passed to Wyatt Montague for a 47 yard touchdown. In their next drive, Coronado’s Bailey Knight connected to Montague once again for a 63 yard touchdown.

I am sure you have spotted a pattern by now. Coronado scored on their next possession. This time Bailey Knight decided to cash in for some points himself by executing a 9 yard QB keeper, 21-0 Coronado.

In the 2nd quarter, Coronado completed a strong drive that resulted in a 3 yard touchdown run by Braeden Laughlin, 27-0 Coronado. San Diego responded with a big play of their own. Dejahn Hutsona rushed for a long 69 yards to the end zone for San Diego’s only touchdown.

Directly after San Diego’s score, Coronado asserted their dominance by adding to the scoreboard. Once again, Bailey Knight decided to keep the ball to himself and rushed for an entire 59 yards for another Coronado touchdown, 34-6.

Next week the Islanders will face the Kearny Komets in their last game of the regular season. That game will decide whether Coronado becomes the 2016 Div. 4 Central league champions. As for San Diego, they will head to the home of the Clairemont Chieftains.

PREVIEW

We are quickly approaching the end of the regular season. Week 10 presents us with the match-up between the Coronado Islanders (6-2) and the San Diego Cavers (1-7) in the historic Balboa Stadium at 7pm.

In Week 9, San Diego finally achieved their first win of the season against the Crawford Colts. The Cavers plan to build from their first win by defeating the Islanders. They have the potential of doing so by tapping into their offensive resources. Those resources consist of Indae Gammon and Raiden Hunter. Gammon has racked up 430 rushing yards while Hunter has reached 350.

For now, the Islanders have their sights set on only one target, the Div. 4 Central league championship. The Islanders have not won a league championship since 2010. That year was the last time Coronado had Bud Mayfield as their head coach. In 2011, the current head coach, Tony Isabella, took the reins of the football program. If things go well against San Diego in Week 10 and Kearny in Week 11, 2016 will be the first season Coach Isabella leads the Islanders to a league championship.

Watch the Prep Pigskin Report on Friday at 10:30 PM to find out whether San Diego makes a statement or Coronado gets one step closer to the league championship.
