Coronado removes church directory that only displayed Christian churches

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – More than a year after Coronado was threatened with possible legal action, the city replaced a church directory sign that had been displayed on public property for decades.

The directory displayed the names of 10 christian churches in the Coronado area .

Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey said the city would remove the sign to avoid potential first amendment legal challenges and in the interest of efficient use of public resources.

The directory was replaced with a larger sign that displays the same 10 Christian churches, as well as civic organizations and one non-Christian religious group.

KUSI contributor and legal analyst Esther Valdes joined KUSI to discuss why the city council decided to replace the sign
