Coroner rules yacht race deaths “accidental”
SAN DIEGO (AP) – Autopsies show blunt force injuries on three sailors who died over the weekend when their yacht was destroyed during a race from California to Mexico.
The San Diego County medical examiner's office said Wednesday that Kevin Rudolph and William Johnson Jr. died from those injuries. A third sailor, Joseph Stewart, also had blunt force injuries but died from drowning.
The coroner ruled the deaths as accidental.
Debris from the 37-foot Aegean was found last weekend. There's been speculation that a larger vessel such as a freighter struck the yacht.
A website that tracks boats by GPS suggests the boat landed on rocks near Mexico's Coronado Island.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
