Countdown to The Silver Pigskin Gala

Dear PPR Viewers:

Last week’s blog focused on the 2015 Silver Pigskin finalists.  This week we’ll focus on everything but the podium.

We are now less than 3 weeks out from the 17th edition of the Silver Pigskin Gala.  The excitement is building to levels we haven’t witnessed since the Gala moved out of the KUSI studios and into the Hall of Champions.

The Hall of Champions was a gracious home to the Gala for nearly a decade; but as our show gained in popularity, the Gala guest list swelled beyond the museum’s capacity.  Rather than risk the wrath of the Balboa Park fire marshal, we needed to find a bigger venue.  Something really big, something like the hanger bay of an aircraft carrier!

Tuesday, December 15th, the Prep Pigskin Report, in partnership with the USS Midway Museum, will broadcast the first ever aircraft carrier Gala.   We started with a guest list of roughly 700.   We are now expecting a crowd close to 1000.

The Gala will be televised locally on KUSI-TV and globally on KUSI.com.  Here are just some of the attractions our viewers and guests can look forward too.

For starters, the USS Midway Museum’s generosity knows no bounds.  Parking on the Naval Street Pier will be free to our attendees. Make sure to keep your invitations. It includes a parking voucher that gets you onto the Pier parking lot.  The invitation is also your ticket to board the Midway.

Besides free parking, the Midway is also opening up its concession stands (with a special Gala menu), flight simulators and theater.  And everybody who attends the Gala will receive free passes for a future Midway visit.  I have but one suggestion for those fortunate enough to receive an invitation.  Arrive early and enjoy this floating piece of history.  The USS Midway is a first class museum run by first class people. I have no doubt you will be as impressed as I am.

Along with the breathtaking venue, the 2015 Gala will offer something for everyone.   Hardcore football fans will enjoy Mike Hacker’s PPR Plays of the Year montage. Nobody covers San Diego high school football like the PPR. Our video archive is busting at the seams with highlights.  Mr. Hacker’s recap will make your heart pound.

Bonita Vista’s "Club Blue" will provide our Gala soundtrack.  The 120 member band will also receive a $1,000 dollar check as the San Diego Honda Dealers Band of the Year.

Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco will be on hand to name the Chargers Coach of the Year. That title comes with a $2,500 dollar check to the school’s football program in the name of their head coach.

Besides meeting the (6) Silver Pigskin finalists, we’ll learn the identity of the 2015 Iron Hog Winner.

The PPR’s John Browner will be hosting a behind the scenes Gala show via Periscope (@PPRPapaPig and @KUSIPPR).

Every year we are fortunate to have our previous Silver Pigskin champions attend to welcome the newest member to their elite club.  In 2015 we expect another strong turnout on “Winners Row.” You might even be surprised at a name or two that shows up this year.

A couple dozen mascots are always on hand to insure the energy level stays pegged in the red zone. Not that anyone will be searching for coffee. The Gala is a loud, fun, family oriented party that attracts the biggest names in high school football and in San Diego.  We even have a seat reserved for the Mayor!

There will be moments that make you laugh, there will be moments that will bring a tear to your eye, but there is nothing like the moment when the envelope comes forward and we all learn together the 17th name to be immortalized on the side of the Prestigious Silver Pigskin.

I could wax on forever, but there is much work to do. For example we still have a show to get ready for this Friday night.  Extended highlights and postgame reaction from all 10 playoff games, along with an in-studio visit from Silver Pigskin finalist Troy Warner are all on the docket. We’ll see you at 10:30 pm.

Until then, may the Pigskin breeze be always at your backs,

Paul W. Rudy
