County program helping Alzheimer’s patients gets recognized by state

SAN DIEGO (KUSI)- In just its first 6 months, a county program to help Alzheimer patients is getting statewide attention. County leaders and first responders met at the Grossmont Healthcare District’s headquarters to recognize the pilot program. The program created the Alzheimer’s Response Team.

The program pairs specially trained first responders with a social worker within an hour of a dementia-related incident, so the person with Alzheimer’s doesn’t end up in an emergency room or something worse.

Social worker Lashaunda Gaines pointed to the success of one of 50 such cases already, including help for the patient’s family and caregiver.
