County begins preparations for flu season
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – San Diego County health officials will kick off their annual influenza vaccination campaign Friday in preparation for “flu season.”
The illness kills 30,000 people in the U.S. annually, according to the county Health and Human Services Department.
In 2009-10, the last year in which records are available, a record 58 flu patients died in San Diego County. The 2010-11 toll is expected to be announced at today's event.
The previous high was 22 in 2003-04.
County health officials say flu vaccinations can prevent the onset of the disease or lessen its impact.
Other precautions include washing hands thoroughly and often, and using hand sanitizers; avoiding sick people; not touching the eyes, nose, or mouth; and routinely cleaning commonly touched surfaces.
