Couple shot by ex-boyfriend at Costco parking lot in Chula Vista still in critical condition
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (AP) — Parents of a baby girl are fighting for their lives after they were shot in a Costco parking lot by the mother’s ex-boyfriend.
The San Diego Union-Tribune says 31-year-old Samuel Valdez and 32-year-old Angelina Perez remain hospitalized Tuesday with critical injuries.
Police say 48-year-old Sean Illian opened fire Monday as the couple loaded groceries into a car in Chula Vista. Their child was nearby but wasn’t hurt.
Illian then killed himself.
Police say Perez broke up with Illian last year.
It’s the third death at a California Costco in recent days. On Friday, an off-duty Los Angeles policeman shot and killed a man his attorney says attacked him at a Corona store.
And a woman died Sunday after being mauled by dogs in the parking lot of a Bakersfield store.

Chula Vista- On June 17, 2019 at approximately 12:35 pm, CVPD patrol officers responded to the Costco parking lot located in the 1100 block of Broadway reference a call of a man shooting people in front of the business.
Upon arrival, officers located three subjects with gunshot related injuries. Several witnesses were interviewed at the scene. Officers learned two of the shooting victims were in the parking lot attempting to place groceries in the trunk of their vehicle when the suspect approached them from behind and began shooting at them. Both victims were shot multiple times by the suspect who then shot himself in the head. While on scene, officers located an infant in a stroller next to the victim’s vehicle. The infant was not injured from the shooting. The victims were identified as the parents of the infant who was later released to family members at the scene.
The victims were identified as Angelina Perez (32 years old) and Samuel Valdez (31 years old). The suspect was later identified as Sean Illian (48 years old). Both victims and the suspect were transported from the scene to a local area trauma center with serious injuries. The suspect Illian was later pronounced dead at the hospital from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both Perez and Valdez are still in the hospital and listed in critical condition.
The investigation is still on-going but has been able to determine the victim Perez and the suspect Illian were in a former dating relationship. Perez ended the relationship with Illian in 2018. Perez began dating Valdez shortly after the breakup. Per witness statements, the relationship between Perez and Illian ended badly. The breakup and new relationship between Perez and Valdez appears to be a potential motive for the shooting.
