Crane crashes onto freeway, causing roadway closure and chemical spill in Rancho Penasquitos

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — A large crane tipped over onto a Rancho Penasquitos-area freeway ramp Wednesday, forcing a closure of the roadway and causing a chemical spill that tangled rush-hour traffic for miles.

The accident on the connector from eastbound state Route 56 to southbound Interstate 15 in northern San Diego occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. There were no reports of injuries.

As of early evening, the crash had caused gridlock as far west as Camino del Sur and north to Carmel Mountain Road on SR-56 and I-15, respectively, CHP public affairs Officer Robert Catano said. Northbound traffic on the latter route was heavier than usual as well, he said.

Caltrans personnel were called in to sop up the hydraulic fluid that drained out of the toppled machine.

The ramp closure was likely to last well into the evening, according to Catano.
