Criminal charges filed against San Diego deputies for assault

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – District Attorney Summer Stephan has filed criminal charges against two San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputies for their actions during a violent arrest in Vista last May.

The deputies were responding to a domestic violence call and were taking two men into custody when Stephan says they stepped over the line.

Deputy Nicholas Morgan, 27, has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of assault without lawful necessity by an officer and faces up to two years in jail if convicted. Deputy Joshua Nahan, 31, has been charged with one misdemeanor count of assault without lawful necessity by an officer and faces up to one year in jail if convicted.

Community activists applauded the charges, but say it’s only a small step toward racial justice in the county.

The deputies are scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Vista.
