CVPD: “Inside CSI”

On June 14th the Chula Vista Police Department becomes the first law enforcement agency in the county to offer classes to the public on the inner workings of a actual police department crime laboratory.

“Inside CSI” is a 10-week course designed to expose participants to various forensic concepts and methods used both in the field and the laboratory.

Every Tuesday evening beginning at 6 p.m., for 3 hours, a CVPD crime laboratory professional will lecture on several disciplines within the field of forensic science. New subjects will be presented every session for the first 8 weeks, leading to week 9 when CSI participants will process their own mock crime scene and present their findings to a “jury” of their peers in the final class.

Inside CSI” offers two types of courses; the family friendly version includes activities encouraging parents and children (ages 13 and older) to experience together the excitement and relevance of math and science in the field of forensic science.

The adults only (ages 18 and older) version involves more in-depth hands-on activities and presentations of actual cases by the crime laboratory personnel.

The course is limited to 20 participants per session and costs $250. The first session sold out in less than a week. All proceeds beyond the cost of putting on the course goes to the Chula Vista Police Foundation and back to the Crime Lab for the purchase of supplies and equipment.
