Deadly racing crash on I-5 freeway

SAN DIEGO — A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on south Interstate 5 near Del Mar Heights Road Friday night, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol website said a witness reported about 11:35 p.m. that the rider appeared to be racing with a black sedan when he crashed into the shoulder, flipped off the motorcycle and landed in a middle lane. Authorities reported that CPR was performed on the rider, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are searching for the driver of the black sedan.

As many as five other vehicles may have been involved in the collision north of Del Mar Heights Road. At least one vehicle ran up an embankment. Several tow trucks were requested.

Traffic was backed up, and the CHP closed southbound freeway lanes to accommodate fire engines and ambulances.

No further information was available.
