Death in crash near Pendleton could have been avoided, police say

CAMP PENDLETON (KUSI) — A driver on the Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton was killed in a crash Wednesday.

Police were sent to investigate the crash just past the exit to Las Pulgas Road shortly before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived they found a vehicle that had hit the guardrail and was blocking the right lane, according to CHP.

The truck slid and came across all five lanes before striking the center devide, police said. The seatbelt was not properly fastened and instead was tied. CHP officers said it could have contributed to the fatality.

Two northbound lanes were closed by CHP, but were reopened around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.
