Del Mar Carmel Valley Sharks girls’ soccer gear up for gold
The All Sports Report showcases the best high school athletes in San Diego. Those play-makers make up the Del Mar Carmel Valley Sharks, an under-17 traveling soccer team.
“We played against each other in high school, and that's fun, and then we come together and play together,” says senior Hailey Harbison.
“We all just came together randomly. Felicia would pick up good players, here and there, and then we all just became a family,” adds junior captain Gianna Montini.
“Just the traveling aspect of it and competitive nature, and how much time we spend, really brings us together,” says Shelby Lee, another junior captain.
In July, the team will head to Maryland to compete for the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship.
“It's always the top of the top, and the tournaments along the way really prepare us,” says Montini.
“You always know when you go to Nationals: any game can be your last and anybody can win it. It's all about the competition,” says Lee.
The sharks will face some of the best teams in the country, and with their success as national champions last year, they will have a target on their backs.
“Yeah, there is pressure. We have a huge target on our back, but we can handle it,” says Harbison.
“To do it again would be even more amazing,” adds Lee.
” We definitely can do it, we just need to stay focused. It would mean the world to our team to have two national championships,” says Montini.
If they can complete the back-to-back, it would be a dream.
“That would be amazing. I've been on this team since I was 10-years-old; finishing off my career that way would be amazing,” says Harbison.
“To end this together and on top would be amazing,” adds Lee.
