Del Mar Opening Day Hat Contest
Del Mar Opening Day is about more than the just the horse racing, the Hat Contest is another main attraction at the thoroughbred club. Many ladies are known to show off large hats with different designs, some classy and some using great imagination. This season, Opening Day drew more men in hats than any previous year! Couples, groups, families, and individuals from San Diego and across the country showing off what they believe to be the best hat of the day.
Kayva Polureu of San Diego wearing a hat made from a horse pinata, while Brian Rob and his wife sport a matching get up with a casino royal theme. "It was all my woman’s idea, I just held the glue gun, and she did the rest!"
Melinda Berry of San Francisco comes to every Del Mar Opening day, changing up her hat each season. "The wind is definitely your enemy, I decided to come with something a little more aerodynamic this year!" The Kann Family also participating this year, each young girl wearing her own designed flower hats, while Dad sported a cost effect design. "I took all their left over animals and people from their mission projects and glued them on!"
The winning hat coming from Andria Elam of Bonita, wearing a simple yet beautiful fascinator. "It’s beginners luck! What an honor to win such an award on Opening Day!"
