Man with knife detained at Chula Vista school
CHULA VISTA (CNS) – A seemingly delusional man carrying a pocket knife was taken into custody at a South Bay primary/middle school today after confronting students and staffers in a classroom while rambling incoherently, police said.
The 33-year-old man walked onto the campus of Mueller Charter School on I Street in Chula Vista shortly before noon, Lt. Scott Arsenault said.
He entered a classroom, where he made nonsensical comments about ice cream and shouted gibberish, “basically speaking in tongues to himself,” before lying down on the floor, the lieutenant said. A school resource officer then took him into custody without incident and held him until city police arrived.
The man, who apparently never opened his folding knife or threatened anyone during the incident at the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade campus, was taken to a mental hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, Arsenault said.
Shortly before wandering onto the school grounds, the man had been kicked out of a nearby 7-Eleven store due to his weird behavior, according to Arsenault.
