Deputy Involved shooting in Vista

An investigation was under way Thursday into a deputy-
involved shooting in which a patrolman killed a man during a scuffle in Vista.

The shooting in the 1300 block of Palomar Place occurred about 4:40 p.m.
Wednesday, according to San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Glenn Giannantonio.

The deputy, who is assigned to a gang enforcement team, was on patrol in
a marked cruiser when he saw a man carrying what appeared to be a knife, the
homicide lieutenant said in a statement.

The deputy confronted the man, who was actually holding a 10-inch file,
and a fight ensued, Giannantonio said.

During the struggle, the suspect took the deputy's Taser, prompting the
deputy to draw his weapon and open fire, the lieutenant said.

The man was struck at least once and died at the scene. His identity was
not immediately known.

The deputy was treated by paramedics for minor injuries, Giannantonio said.
