Division I Final: St. Augustine 49, Madison 42

Jacob Baker outmuscled a Madison defender for a jump ball in the end zone with three seconds left, and St. Augustine rallied to beat the Warhawks, 49-42, and repeat as CIF champions while avenging a loss to the Warhawks in the 2012 final.

Baker and Madison’s Gabe Jimenez appeared to possess the ball simultaneously while falling to the ground on Baker’s winning catch. After appearing to make sure Baker still had his hands on the ball, the referee signaled touchdown and set off a wild celebration on the St. Augustine sideline.

The touchdown, thrown by Saints quarterback Thomas Goodridge, was St. Augustine’s third straight, and capped off a wild CIF final that saw a total of 13 touchdowns scored, and no field goals.

The Saints trailed 42-28 in the third quarter after Madison’s Silver Pigskin Finalist Kareem Coles, Jr. hit Brandon Lewis on a 73-yard scoring strike.

St. Augustine’s Darrell Broussard jump-started the comeback with a 25-yard touchdown run late in the 3rd quarter, pulling the Saints to within seven.

Francoise Sims tied the game at 42 with a 3-yard touchdown run early in the 4th.

After stopping Madison on a 4th down conversion attempt with less than three minutes remaining, Goodridge found Tariq Thompson down the sideline fora spectacular one-handed catch that set the Saints up at the 10-yard-line.

Needing only a field goal for the win, the Saints sent Elijah Preston into the line on 1st down. The ball came loose and Madison defenders signaled they had recovered the fumble.  However, referees ruled Preston down by contact, and with the clock still running the Saints scrambled to the line to take one more shot at the end zone before presumably attempting a game-winning field goal. Baker’s heroics ensured that wouldn’t be necessary.

Preston, who rushed for over 200 yards, opened the scoring in the 1st quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Saints lead.

Coles, Jr. then scored on runs of 1 and 7 yards, giving the Warhawks a 14-7 lead.

After Sims tied things up at 14 with a 6-yard touchdown run, Madison’s Shaheed Madyun caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Coles, Jr., sending the Warhawks into the locker room with a 21-14 lead.

St. Augustine’s Silver Pigskin Finalist Frank Buncom, IV came out for the 2nd half in street clothes and on crutches, apparently sustaining a leg injury at some point in the 1st half, meaning if the Saints were going to come back they’d have to do it without the services of their senior captain.

It didn’t look good for St. Augustine early in the 2nd half after Madison’s Isaiah Osborne rumbled 51 yards to the end zone, extending the Warhawk lead to 28-14.

Preston closed the gap to 28-21 with his second touchdown of the day, this one from six yards out.

Madyun caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Coles, Jr. to push Madison’s lead back to 14 points.

Goodridge brought the Saints back to within seven with a 5-yard touchdown run, the fourth of six touchdowns scored in the game’s 3rd quarter.

After starting the season 3-5, the Saints won their final five games, including Friday’s championship. Madison finishes the season 9-4.
