Domestic violence fatality
EL CAJON (CNS) – A man arrested this week for allegedly gravely wounding his teenage girlfriend in an assault at an East County home pleaded not guilty to a murder charge today following the woman's death in a hospital.
Roshawn Lamar Broadnax, 20, was ordered held on $3 million bail. He was jailed Tuesday afternoon after deputies responding to a reported assault in the 9500 block of Piedmont Street in Spring Valley found him tending to 19-year-old Deazjnae Banks, sheriff's Lt. Larry Nesbit said.
Paramedics took Banks to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego where she was admitted in critical condition. Physicians removed her from life-support equipment about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Nesbit.
Sheriff's officials have withheld the cause of Banks' death and details on what might have led to the alleged slaying.
During the defendant's arraignment today, Deputy District Attorney Danielle Hickman said Broadnax and Banks had been dating for about a year-and-a-half.
“What is very concerning about this case obviously is that it's a case of domestic violence,” the prosecutor said outside court. “It's very tragic that we're here today because a young woman in our community has now died at the hands of someone she was in a relationship with.
Broadnax, who has a prior conviction for burglary, faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted. A readiness conference is scheduled July 19 and a preliminary hearing for July 26.
