Donation centers in need of blood in summer months

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Summer is a challenging time for blood centers due to a number of people leaving San Diego — for vacations or because schools are out of session — but the need for blood remains.

The United States blood supply is facing critically low inventory levels due to the summer months, and the San Diego Blood Blank and others are encouraging the San Diego community to help.

“Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is indispensable and required in the treatment of millions of patients,” Miriam A Markowitz, CEO of AABB, a company that helps the transfusion field, said.

Those above the age of 17, with a weight over 113 pounds and general good health are asked to donate blood. Donors can schedule an appointment by visiting or by calling 1-800-469-7322.
