Driver is behind bars after sending pickup truck off overpass and fleeing
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A 20-year-old probationer was back behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of fleeing the scene of a serious-injury weekend traffic accident that sent a pickup truck hurtling off a towering Mission Valley freeway overpass and onto a restaurant below.
Jose Carlos Uribe of San Diego was arrested at his home Monday evening in connection with the collision on the interchange from westbound Interstate 8 to northbound I-805, according to the California Highway Patrol.
About 3 p.m. Sunday, Uribe’s 2000 Ford Excursion crashed into a 2006 Ford F-250 on the ramp, causing the truck to careen over the edge of the span, CHP public-affairs Officer Jake Sanchez said.
The pickup fell about 50 feet, landing on top of a building housing a Dave & Buster’s restaurant, then falling to the ground and coming to rest on its wheels.
Uribe allegedly fled following the crash, Sanchez said.
Emergency crews extricated the driver of the pickup truck, Kenneth Fruedenvoll of San Diego, from the wreckage of his vehicle. Medics took Fruedenvoll to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment of severe injuries.
Uribe was booked into San Diego Central Jail. He was being held on $50,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
