Drunk driving suspect bites CHP officer’s arm in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA (KUSI) – A man suspected of drunk driving was arrested after allegedly biting a California Highway Patrol officer and reaching for the officer’s gun.

The officer was responding to a single-car crash reported around 1:15 p.m. Monday near the Main Street on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5, CHP Officer Jake Sanchez said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and found a 35-year-old Chula Vista man acting erratically, Sanchez said.

An officer arrived and tried to calm the man down, but the driver continued to act aggressively, CHP Sgt. Steve Jio said. The man allegedly pushed the officer, prompting the officer to try to arrest him.

A physical altercation ensued and the officer tried to wrestle the suspect to the ground, Jio said. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly reached for the officer’s gun and bit him on the arm.

Footage from the scene showed it took firefighters, several other officers and a tow truck driver to help subdue the suspect.

The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment of severe bite injuries to his arm, Jio said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital to be evaluated for injuries, Sanchez said. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and assault on a peace officer causing injury.
