Fugitive accused of wrong-way DUI back behind bars

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – An Escondido musician who disappeared while awaiting trial on charges stemming from a wrong-way DUI freeway crash that cost another motorist an arm was back behind bars Tuesday following his capture in Baja California, authorities reported.

Daniel Castro, 34, was taken into custody in Ensenada, Mexico, then transported back to San Diego and booked into county jail Monday night on a slate of charges, including failure to appear in court on a felony charge, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Shortly before 2 a.m. last May 22, Castro allegedly was driving a Toyota Sequoia to the north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Balboa Park when it hit a Ford Fusion head-on.

The wreck left the 28-year-old driver of the Ford with severe injuries, including the loss of her left arm.

Castro, the keyboard player in a band called Long Live Logos, was initially booked on suspicion of driving while intoxicated causing great bodily injury. While out on bail recently, he failed to show up for a hearing in the case, CHP public-affairs Officer Jake Sanchez said.

It was unclear how authorities tracked down Castro south of the border.
