East County Game of the Week: Monte Vista 31, Mt. Miguel 28
A pre-game twitter war left The Monte Vista Monarchs on a mission Friday night and they answered with a tweet, tweet of their own, dispatching their neighbor, the Mount Miguel Matadors 31-28 in front of chirping home crowd.
It was a see-saw game that saw Mount Miguel running back Antoinnie Hamilton score a 16-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to give the Matadors a 14-7 lead.
Monte Vista responded with a half-back pass from Tre Owens to Johnny Jones on fourth down for a touchdown, 14-14.
In the third quarter the Matadors took the lead back with Jacob Castillo’s touchdown strike to Jay-von Jones, one of his two on the day, to make it 21-17. Castillo found receiver Mario Coker inside the ten yard line but he was stripped of the ball and it was recovered by Johnny Jones.
Monarch running back Lee Wade Jr. broke away for a 65-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 31-21 and Monte Vista was able to hold off a late comeback, recovering an onside kick and kneeling out the game for the upset.
Both teams move to (2-2) on the season, Mt. Miguel will head home to face winless Serra (0-4), while Monte Vista will try to ride the home momentum as they take on Kearny (0-3).
