East County Game of the Week: Granite Hills Eagles 35, El Cajon Valley Braves 0

The Week 10 El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week was a Grossmont Valley League match up.  The Granite Hills Eagles hosted the visiting El Cajon Valley Braves in the Battle for the Madison Cup on what was also Senior Night for the Eagles.

Things started well for the Braves, who recovered their own onside opening kick.  However, they failed to take advantage of the good field position.  The Eagles then struck on their own opening drive.  Thomas Youmog led the charge with a long run across midfield.  Eventually Gustavo Gutierrez brought it in for the Eagles from 1 yard out and Granite was out to an early 7-0 lead.

Gustavo made a one handed interception on the Braves ensuing drive, and that set up another Granite Hills score.  This time Thomas Youmog found the end zone from 3 yards out to make it 14-0.

In the 2nd quarter the Eagles had their first, and only, passing score of the game.  Jacob Siegfried and Jacob Burton hooked up on a 21 yard touchdown connection to make it 21-0.

Youmog found pay dirt twice more for the Eagles, once in the 2nd quarter (14 yards) and once at the start of the 3rd quarter (3 yards).  The starters took a seat on the bench soon thereafter, and a running clock brought things to a quick finish.  The Eagles came out victorious by a score of 35-0.

The celebration continued for Granite Hills after the game, when they joined the East County Game of the Week crew at El Cajon Ford for a viewing party.  The players and cheerleaders brought the energy – competing in pumpkin carving contests, prize giveaways and even assisting with the highlights.

Next week Granite travels to Santana.  A win against the Sultans would give them their first league title since 1988.

Preview: The Week 10 El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week brings us back to Granite Hills High School.  The Eagles are hosting the El Cajon Valley Braves in a Grossmont Valley League match up on their Senior Night.

The Eagles enter the game with a 7-1 record overall, and are 2-0 in conference play.  Two more victories would give Granite Hills their first league championship since 1988.  The Braves are also looking to make some history while challenging the Eagles on Friday.  At 5-3 overall and 1-2 in league, El Cajon Valley is off to their best start in a decade and looks to keep things rolling with a second conference win.

Granite Hills Head Coach Kellan Cobbs attributes much of his squad’s success this season to the defense.  “Our defense has been lights out,” he said, “a lot of different guys have stepped up and made big plays for us this year.”  He referenced the two goal line stands against El Capitan and two forced 4th quarter turnovers against West Hills as key moments for the defense this season.  His defense will have to continue to perform well this week to beat a Braves team that he notes is “a much improved football team with a lot of really talented guys.”

Friday night is a big night in general for the East County Game of the Week.  In addition to featuring a competitive match up between two teams looking to make history this season, we will also be LIVE from our sponsor location – El Cajon Ford – during the Prep Pigskin Report starting at 10:30pm.  As soon as the game is over, fans and members of the East County community are encouraged to make their way to El Cajon Ford.  In addition to watching the show, there will be other contests and giveaways to add to the fun!
