East County Game of the Week: Steele Canyon Cougars 49, El Camino Wildcats 17
The first round of the Division I playoffs out at Steele Canyon ended in a Cougar win 49-17 over the El Camino Wildcats.
The first score came in the first quarter as Cougar Kenneth Watson takes the ball 43 yards out for the score and a 7-0 lead. The Wildcats responds right back as quarterback Brock Member throws a bomb pass to Jordan Wilkins fir a 39 yard gain leading to a 30 yard field goal to change the scoreboard 7-3. Later in the first quarter, Chris Carter off the kick return and takes it all the way into Wildcat territory to the 30 yard line leading to a 14 yard touchdown run by quarterback Nathan Barnett.
In the second quarter the Wildcats get their first touchdown of the night as Zion Jackson runs the ball in for a 39 yard touchdown and the Wildcats only down by 5 with a score of 14-9. Steele Canyon would sneak one more touchdown by Kenneth Watson before ending the first half.
Steele Canyon quarterback Nathan Barnett records three more touchdowns in the second half as the Cougars go on to win the first round of the playoffs. El Camino finished their season with one win and 10 losses. Steele Canyon will play St. Augustine next Friday night.

After winning a the state Division 3-A title last year, Steele Canyon won’t leave this game without putting up a fight in hopes of a repeat of last season.
The Cougars are coming off a huge upset win over rival Helix Highlanders 22-21. Steele Canyon’s first victory over Helix since 2009. In fact, the cougars have been running the wave of success over the last four weeks, beating El Cap, Valhalla and Grossmont on top of the Helix win.
Cougar quarterback Nathan Barnett will play in his first play off game in San Diego after transferring from New Jersey. Barnett is just as quick on his feet as he is in the air finishing the regular season with 668 passing yards for 4 passing touchdowns and 675 rushing yards for 15 rushing touchdowns. Sophomore running back Wes Neely also dominates the running game with 466 rushing yards for 5 touchdowns.
On the other side of the ball, the El Camino Wildcats didn’t come into the play offs as easily as Steele Canyon. The Wildcats are coming off a loss to Oceanside 46-30. In fact, the Wildcats haven’t won a game since week 1 against Point Loma. El Camino also didn’t win a single avocado league game this season, finishing the regular season 1-9.
The El Camino offense is lead by senior captain quarterback Brock Manber with 666 passing yards for for 2 touchdowns and 60 rushing yards for two touchdowns. Manber’s main target is Zion Jackson. Rense Garner leads the running game for the Wildcats. El Camino hoping to go deep into the playoffs this year.
