East County Game of the Week: West Hills Wolf Pack 6, Valhalla Norsemen 37
The El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week traveled to Valhalla High School for the first time this season. The Norsemen (3-1) hosted the West Hills Wolf Pack (2-3) in each team’s final non-conference matchup of the regular season.
The Norsemen came into this game holding opponents to an average of fewer than 8 points a game, and the defense kept things rolling tonight.
On their opening drive Valhalla marched down field and scored on a Rahshaun Sharpe 3 yard touchdown run.
Jovan Bea followed with a nice kickoff return across midfield for the Pack. Senior Quarterback Spencer Moyer then connected with Clayton Lewis to put the Pack in a 1st and goal situation on the 10 yard line. The Norsemen defense held strong, with Daniel Bender leading the charge, and forced West Hills to attempt a field goal, which was no good.
CJ Erwin recovered from the miss better than Josh Scobee and proceeded to kick two field goals for the Wolf Pack in the 2nd quarter. The Norsemen added one of their own by Connor Chamberlain to make it 9-6 Valhalla at the half.
The Norsemen pulled away in the 3rd quarter. Jerome Johnson led things off with a 9 yard touchdown on Valhalla’s opening drive. The Wolf Pack went 3 and out, and their punt went out of bounds giving Valhalla good field position at the 43. Quarterback Phillip Naseh wasted no time, finding Brandon Fuller in the end zone to make it 23-6 Norsemen.
West Hills continued to struggle against the Valhalla defense. They fumbled away their next possession. Valhalla couldn’t capitalize, however, and the Pack got the ball back. Once again, they couldn’t pick up the first down, so they were forced to punt. Bender swooped in for the Norsemen and got a hand on it, Anthony Portillo recovered for Valhalla. Sharpe then picked up his second rushing touchdown of the evening, this one from 12 out.
As the Norsemen crowd began to chant “it’s too easy” the Valhalla D continued to roll. Late in the 3rdquarter Logan Baker tipped Moyer’s pass to teammate Trey Shimke for the interception. Johnson followed with a 15 yard touchdown to cap the quarter.
The backups entered and the running clock kicked off in the 4th and the Norsemen marched themselves to another convincing victory, winning this one 37-6 over West Hills.
PREVIEW:
The El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week is heading to Valhalla High School for our Week 6 showdown. The 3-1 Norsemen are hosting the 2-3 West Hills Wolf Pack in what will be each team’s last non-conference game of the regular season.
The Wolf Pack is coming off of a tough 35-12 Week 5 loss to the Valley Center Jaguars. Senior Quarterback Spencer Moyer is looking to reignite the Pack offense, which had scored a season high 42 points against La Jolla the prior week. Moyer has rushed for 357 yards and 3 touchdowns this season, and passed for another 760 yards and 8 touchdowns.
Moyer and key receivers Taj Broomfield and Tyler Sepulveda will certainly have to step up against a very tough Norsemen defense. The most points the Norsemen D has allowed all season was 14 during their Week 1 loss to Otay Ranch. Since then they have allowed 10 or fewer points per game, including a shut out against Mar Vista. Logan Baker leads the Valhalla defensive effort. Baker is 2nd in the east county in solo tackles (25) and he has another 11 assists for a total of 36 tackles. He has also notched 4 sacks on the season. Last week the D combined for 5 interceptions in a 49-7 victory over Patrick Henry. The Norsemen offensive attack is led by Senior Quarterback Phillip Naseh. Naseh is 51 of 85 this season for 628 yards and 6 touchdowns. Also coming off an impressive 3 touchdown performance last week is Running Back Rahshaun Sharpe.
