East County Game of the Week: West Hills 21, Monte Vista 13

Two East County powerhouses met this week for the Grossmont Valley League Championship game. Leading 14-13 in the fourth quarter, West Hills junior quarterback Spencer Moyer found fellow junior Taj Broomfield on a short screen pass and he managed to break away for the game winning touchdown in a 21-13 victory over the Monte Vista Monarchs.

West Hills entered the game riding a 6-game winning streak while the Monarchs were undefeated in league play. Defense dominated the match up early, as Wolf Pack senior Devon Hathaway intercepted a tipped pass to end the Monte Vista scoring threat. The Monarchs responded however, stopping West Hills on 4th and goal to keep the game scoreless but they fumbled it right back on the ensuing drive.

West Hills took advantage as senior running back Alfonso Gregg scored from four yards out for a 7-0 lead. Monarch senior running back Lee Wade Jr broke a spectacular 40-yard run, leaving the defenders in the dust and drawing the score even. In the third, Wolf Pack senior Jacob Shaw scored on a run inside the 10 to make it 14-7, but Wade broke away on another touchdown from 10-yards out to make it 14-13 in the fourth quarter.

That’s when Moyer found Broomfield who sped past the defense and put the Monarchs on the ropes. In the final minutes, Monte Vista was deep in Wolf Pack territory when a pass was intercepted by senior Will Petty on the 10-yard line to seal the victory.

Both teams will move on to the past season with Monte Vista (6-4) playing Parker (5-5), and the Wolf Pack (8-2), taking on Imperial (6-4).
