El Cajon doctor pleads guilty to sexually assaulting female patients

EL CAJON (KUSI) – Oh Friday, a doctor admitted to sexually assaulting female patients and take explicit photographs of them with his phone at an El Cajon clinic for low-income patients.

The sexual misconduct took place at Volunteers in Medicine, a low-income clinic in the 1400 block of Madison Avenue

Between June of 2010 and June of 2014,  Dr. Jeffrey Joel Abrams conducted "unnecessary and inappropriate'' vaginal exams on patients. He told the women he wanted to take photographs for teaching purposes, but no photos were found in the patients' medical files, according to Deputy district Attorney Kerry Conway.

Abrams, 68, was arrested last November and his medical license was suspended.

On Thursday, he pleaded guilty to eight counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person, three counts of sexual battery and one count of possession of child pornography, involving pictures of an 8-year-old girl.

A patient alerted authorities after she said Abrams had touched her inappropriately and took photos of her during a visit in January 2014.

Sentencing is tentatively set for Sept. 18.

Abrams faces a sentence ranging from probation to more than 25 years behind bars if convicted.
