El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week: El Cajon Valley Braves 22, Serra Conquistadors 24

The first round of playoffs brought the El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week to El Cajon Valley High School.  The 7th ranked Braves hosted the 10th ranked Serra Conquistadors in a Division Four match up.

After a scoreless first quarter the Q-Dawgs jumped on the board first in the second when Robert Harvey carried it in from 1 yard out.

The Braves promptly responded when Tyson Smith found Luis Morales in the end zone for a 25 yard score.  Smith ran it in for the two point conversion to put El Cajon Valley ahead 8-7.

Serra countered with another strong drive.  Joaquin Quintana-McKinney hooked up with Ty Dixon for a 33 yard gain, and then he found Chance Cannon for a first down.  Harvey capped the drive with his second touchdown of the night, this one a 13 yarder, to put the Conquistadors back on top 14-8.

On the next drive Tyson Smith and Brandon Robinson connected for a big gain that brought the Braves to the 1 yard line, leading to a short Smith touchdown run.  The Braves attempted the point after kick, but it was no good and the score was tied at 14 at the half.

The Braves turned the ball over on downs on the opening drive of the second half and Serra took advantage.  They pulled back ahead 21-14 after a Quintana-McKinney’s 5 yard touchdown pass to Chance Cannon.

David Gasca added a 29 yard field goal in the fourth quarter for Serra to extend their lead to 24-14.

On the ensuing kickoff Greg Jones was back to return.  He appeared to be wrapped up at the 20 yard line, but broke free and ran 80 yards for the touchdown.  The two point conversion was good and the Braves pulled within two.

Serra fumbled the ball away on the next drive and the Braves had a chance to drive for the win but Ryen Sanford intercepted an errant pass to ice the victory for the Q-Dawgs.

Serra held on to upset the Braves 24-22 and will travel to Monte Vista next week to face the Monarchs in the D-IV Quarterfinals.

PREVIEW: The first round of playoffs brings the El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week back to El Cajon Valley High School.  The 7th seed Braves are hosting the 10th seed Serra Conquistadors in Division IV match up.

The Conquistadors (4-6) are making their first playoff appearance since 2013.  Although they lost last week to Patrick Henry, they had two blow out wins against Hoover and Clairemont in the weeks prior that should help provide some momentum coming into playoffs.

El Cajon Valley is hoping to advance beyond the first round this year, as they stumbled to Kearny in the opening Round of Division IV in 2015.  The Braves got off to a quick start this season, winning their first five games.  They went winless in Grossmont Valley League action, though, to even up their regular season record at .500.  The Braves will look to Senior Quarterback Tyson Smith to reignite their offense to help them move on to the next round.

The Braves and Conquistadors have had one common opponent this year, the Clairemont Chieftains.  The Braves beat them by a margin of 32-28 in week three while Serra beat them 42-20 in week nine.

We will have previews of this game during the Pre-PR on Friday from 5pm – 7pm and complete highlights during the Prep Pigskin Report at 10:30pm.
