El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week: Granite Hills Eagles 28, El Capitan Vaqueros 7
The Granite Hills Eagles (3-2) rumbled to a 28-7 win over the visiting El Capitan Vaqueros (2-3) in the El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week.
The Vaqueros started off the scoring in the first quarter. Antonio Olivieri stayed under center for a third straight game, and he found fellow senior Dylan Burke in the back of the end zone for a 22-yard strike to make it 7-0 El Capitan.
Eagles quarterback Jacob Siegfried spent most of the night with the ball tucked under his arm. In the second quarter, after bowling over a Vaquero defender on a 24-yard gain, he would cap the drive with a 19-yard run to even the score. Siegfried then weaved his way to the endzone from 15 yards out to give Granite a 14-7 lead. And after David Tyler Gonzalez picked up 11 yards to put the ball just outside the goal line, Siegfried plunged in for his third rushing score of the quarter.
Gonzalez took the first handoff of the third quarter, and this time he left no doubt, sprinting 73 yards to push the score to 28-7. The Eagles’ defense took over from there, with defensive end Will Burton making multiple stops in the backfield to lead the charge.
Next week, El Capitan hosts Grossmont to open their Grossmont – Hills slate. Granite Hills travels to Santana for their Grossmont – Valley debut.
Preview: The El Capitan Vaqueros (2-2) look to make it three wins in a row as they take on the Granite Hills Eagles (2-2) in the El Cajon Ford East County Game of the Week.
Coach Ron Burner’s squad fell to Madison and Mater Dei to open the season, but has bounced back with wins over Valley Center and Patrick Henry despite a number of key injuries. Antonio Olivieri, who usually lines up at tight end and defensive end, has spent the past two games under center in place of Wick Hauser. Against Henry, the senior threw for 230 and two touchdowns while also running for 71 yards and a pair of scores.
Have your program handy to keep track of twins Chase (#3) and Chance (#25) Lovato, who help anchor the secondary. Against Valley Center, Chase opened the scoring on a 36-yard interception return and Chance closed out the contest with a pick to halt the Jaguars’ final drive.
Both Lovatos will keep their eyes on senior Jacob Siegfried, the dual-threat quarterback who orchestrates the Eagles’ offense. Granite Hills has struggled on the road, putting up just 14 points in losses to San Pasqual and Valley Center. But they’ve lit up the home scoreboard for 77 points in a pair of wins over Valhalla and Steele Canyon.
The Eagles feature a number of two-way standouts on the interior, including Garrett Curran (T/DT), Will Burton (TE/DE), and Tyler Gonzalez (DE/RB).
