El Capitan 42, Serra 0

El Capitan rode a comprehensive team effort to a 42-0 win in Friday night’s matchup with Serra.

The Vaqueros didn’t bring their sharpest passing attack. Quarterback Brad Cagle and his receivers seemed uncharacteristically out of synch, with multiple overthrows and missed connections. In the first half, Serra was able to force them into a pair of turnovers on downs.

But the Vaqueros found contributions from all three phases. After Serra’s opening drive stalled, Isaiah Capoocia fielded the punt and didn’t let a Conquistador get a two-hand-touch on him, as he cruised 81 yards to open the scoring.

Capoocia ended the next Serra drive with an interception, one of three Vaquero picks on the night.

The running game extended the lead early in the second quarter, as DJ Smith punched in a two-yard touchdown.

Cagle opened his touchdown tally with a seven-yard toss to Capoocia with just 3:45 left in the half. That opened the floodgates, as Cagle found both Joseph Lachappa and Capoocia (again) for scores before the break to push El Cap’s advantage to 35-0.

The Vaqueros take their 4-0 record into next week’s home matchup with fellow undefeated Granite Hills.

Serra quarterback Josh Moran left the field in the second quarter to have his knee examined on the sidelines. The Q-Dawgs will hope to have him back at the helm as they look for their first win on the road at Mount Miguel.
