Elderly pedestrian struck and killed by pickup in El Cajon

EL CAJON (CNS) – An 87-year-old man was fatally struck by a pickup truck while he and two family members were attempting to cross an El Cajon roadway, police said Friday.

The victim was following two relatives from the center median into the 600 block of Broadway near Cherrywood Way shortly before 5:30 p.m. Thursday when he was struck by a westbound Ford truck, according to El Cajon police Lt. Greg Robertson.

Witnesses told officers the man was dressed in dark clothing and seemed to be unaware of the oncoming traffic, Robertson said. He suffered severe injuries to his head and body in the crash and was taken to a hospital where he later died. His name was not immediately available.

The truck’s driver, a man in his 40s, stopped following the crash. Robertson said the driver was not injured and was cooperating with investigators. Neither speed nor alcohol were suspected factors in the crash, the lieutenant said.

Robertson asked anyone with additional information on the accident to call police at (619) 441-1632.
