Encinitas students get fresh greens at the Green Garden Cafe

From school garden produce on the salad bar to regionally sourced milk, Green Garden Cafe is providing Encinitas students with nourishing foods that we can all feel good about.

Lea Bonelli, director of the Child Nutrition Department of Encinitas Union School District, visited the studio Monday to talk about the unique school lunch program.

Encinitas USD Child Nutrition Department serves 9 elementary schools in the Encinitas and South Carlsbad areas, making food fresh daily from their central kitchen. The program focus is on scratch made cooking, creating entrees that use ingredients that are minimally processed, responsibly sourced, local, seasonal and organic whenever possible.

Encinitas USD sources a good portion of their produce from their certified organic farm called the Farm Lab. This includes lettuce to fill daily salad bars, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, sweet potatoes, squash and much more.

When students are involved in the growing of their own food, they are more excited about eating it. Every year, all students at EUSD take a week long field trip to the Farm Lab where they see how the produce is grown and learn about the importance of eating and buying local.
