End of an era: O.B. Hardware closes after 100 years

OCEAN BEACH (KUSI) – When they opened their doors in 1919, World War One had just begun, Einstein had just developed his Theory of Relativity, and only the wealthy could afford a car.

Fast forward 100 years, and O.B. Hardware remains that reminder of yesteryear.

“This was the place to go when I was a kid. I went to Point Loma High School and we would always go to the hardware store and hang out”, says Ocean Beach native Judy Perry.

After a century of selling nuts and bolts, another mom and pop hardware store is headed to the history books.

“Well, this place is Legacy. This place is part of the fabric of this community.  When you go inside, it reminds me of how things were 100-years ago”, says Ocean Beach Local Bob Gavin.

The current owner has worked there since 1969 and bought the place in the early 80’s.

“Well, when we close this place in 2019, it will be 100-years old and I will have worked here for 50,” says O.B. Hardware owner Carl Weidetz.

“Let me be clear, this is not because Target is moving in or the landlord raising the rent, those two things are not true”, says Weidetz.

“We actually wanted to retire 5-years ago, but decided to sign another lease to make it an even 100-years.  Maybe we should have done it then”

But they didn’t, and you still have time to shop and remember the good old days.

O.B. Hardware will not close until March of 2019. After that, you can tell your kids how it used to be.
