Escondido Charter 6, La Jolla Country Day 41
Friday, September 12th
To no surprise, La Jolla Country Day came out passing the football. Braxton Burmeister opened the first drive with a 10-yard pass to one of his most targeted receivers, David Wylie. The duo wasn’t done yet. Wylie would follow that up with a 20-yard catch and run. This put the Torreys on the White Tiger’s two yard line. On the next play, Cody Galvan put the first points on the board for the Torreys with a two-yard touchdown run.
The Torreys kept the ball in the air in the second quarter. After a failed fourth down attempt by the White Tigers, the Torreys got the ball back in good field position. Burmeister then found Brennan Goring over the middle for the 40-yard touchdown to put the Torreys up 14-0. Before the half, Burmeister found another one of his favorite weapons. Darien Brown was wide open in the end zone for the 17-yard touchdown to extend the Torreys lead to 28-0.
But, the play of the game goes to Cole Goldklang. With minutes left in the third quarter, the White Tigers were driving down the field when Goldklang intercepted the ball and ran it back 97 yards for the touchdown. What makes this even more impressive? Goldklang is wearing a large blue cast on his left arm to help heal a dislocated finger. According to athletic director Jeff Hutzler, Goldklang had to beg his parents to play through his injury. Tonight, it paid off. La Jolla Country Day would go on to win its first win of the season, beating Escondido Charter by a final score of 41-6.
