Explosion in Escondido injures one

ESCONDIDO (CNS) – A gardener was injured by something that exploded when he stepped on it behind a North County home today, authorities reported.

The blast in the 1900 block of Via Scott in unincorporated Escondido was reported shortly before 1 p.m., according to sheriff's officials.

Medics took the man to Palomar Medical Center, according to Lt. Jim Duffy, who said the victim's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Sheriff's bomb-arson personnel went to the home to determine what caused the detonation and whether any additional threats remained, a dispatcher said. The FBI also was called in to investigate.
