Fallbrook fire chars 2 acres and evacuates campground

FALLBROOK (CNS) – A fire of unknown origin charred about two open acres Tuesday in the far northern reaches of San Diego County, forcing the evacuation of a campground but causing no structural damage.

The blaze erupted around 12:45 p.m. off De Luz Road and Sandia Creek Drive in Fallbrook, according to Cal Fire.

As the flames spread, authorities cleared people out of a nearby small camping area as a precaution, said Kendal Bortisser, a fire captain with the state agency.

It took ground crews and personnel aboard air tankers and water-dropping helicopters about two hours to get the blaze fully contained.

Three inmates working a firefighting detail suffered minor exhaustion-related ailments while helping douse the flames, Bortisser said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
