Border Patrol agent injured in fatal Pine Valley pursuit

PINE VALLEY (CNS) – An explosion that followed a pursuit of a wrong-way driver near Buckman Springs killed one person and injured a Border Patrol Agent today, authorities said.

Sheriff's Homicide detectives and bomb arson unit were investigating the incident, which was reported about 12:35 a.m. on Old Highway 80 just near of Buckman Springs Road, sheriff's officials said. What triggered the blast was not immediately determined.

The agent was trying to pull over a wrong way driver who then traveled back to the correct side of the highway and was stopped, said Border Patrol Agent Scott Simon.

The agent was next to the vehicle when it exploded, Simon said. He was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, Simon said. The wrong-way driver died at the scene, he said.

Old Highway 80 was closed from Sunrise Highway to Buckman Springs Road following the incident and remained closed past 7 a.m.
