Woman killed in paragliding crash

LA JOLLA (CNS) – A woman killed in a paragliding crash in Torrey Pines over the weekend has been identified as a 52-year-old South Carolina woman.

Pamela Hargett of Inman, S.C., was paragliding along the Torrey Pines cliffs about 12:30 p.m. Saturday when she apparently lost control and crashed into the side of the cliffs, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office and lifeguards.

The downed glider came to rest on a cliff above Black's Beach, south of the Torrey Pines Gliderport, according to lifeguards.

Her boyfriend saw Hargett hit the cliffs and called 911, the Medical Examiner's Office reported.

Lifeguards rappelled down the cliff and secured the woman, who was unconscious. She was then hoisted to the top of the cliffs, lifeguards said.

Emergency personnel started cardiac life support efforts, but she was pronounced dead on the cliffs, the Medical Examiner's Office reported.
