Father gets 4 years in prison in connection with death of his son

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A father convicted of abandoning his 4-year-old son after a crash on Interstate 5 was sentenced Friday to four years in prison.

In June of 2013, Angelo Fabiani crashed his vehicle resulting in the death of his 4-year-old son Valentino.

The child was left dangling in his car seat after the crash as Fabiani’s vehicle was actually hanging over the freeway. Valentino ended up falling headfirst onto the concrete below, resulting in his death.

Prosecutors said Fabiani walked away from the scene.

While he has four DUI convictions, prosecutors said they don’t know if he had been drinking on the night of the crash because he was able to walk away.

Fabiani’s attorney argued his client actually acted in an heroic fashion in trying to save his son by jumping out of the truck after the wreck and trying to get him out of his carseat.

The attorney said Fabiani’s brain shut down after the crash.

Fabiani was convicted of hit-and-run causing death, but was acquitted of child endangerment charges.
