FDA approves new flu drug called Xofluza

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The FDA recently approved a new medicine for treating the flu, called Xofluza. Doctors say the drug gives them and patients another option for possibly relieving symptoms and shortening illness when people are infected with influenza.

Xofluza was shown to be just as effective as the previously existing treatment Tamiflu, you only need to take a single dose of Xofluza, making it more convenient than Tamiflu which requires taking two pills a day for five days.

Scripps primary care physician Dr. Erik Hogen talked about what this new drug means for patients.
