Field hockey coach arrested on unlawful sex charge

CHULA VISTA (CNS) – A 49-year-old youth field-hockey coach was behind bars Thursday on suspicion of carrying on a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old South Bay girl for as long as a year.

Jose Antonio Carrillo of Encanto was arrested Wednesday afternoon during a tournament at ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, according to police.

Carrillo, a volunteer coach at Bonita Vista High School and an hourly instructor at Jackie Robinson YMCA in San Diego, allegedly began having sex with the teenager in the middle of last year, CVPD Capt. Gary Wedge said.

The case came to light early this week, when the alleged victim's aunt saw the girl with an unfamiliar cell phone and asked where she had gotten it, according to Wedge. The teen said Carrillo had given it to her, then admitted to the alleged affair with the coach under further questioning, the captain said.

The suspect was booked into county jail on six counts of sexual contact with a minor. He was being held on $270,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday afternoon.
