Fire breaks out at Wong’s Golden Palace in La Mesa
LA MESA (KUSI) — A fire broke out at a Chinese-food restaurant in La Mesa Tuesday, causing an estimated $300,000 worth of damage.
Heartland Fire & Rescue firefighters were sent to battle a fire that broke out in the kitchen of Wong’s Golden Palace in the 7000 block of University Ave. just after 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the structure. Flames were extinguished withing 15 minutes, Mark Casey, a spokesman for Heartland Fire & Rescue said.
Video of the scene showed smoke coming from the top of the restaurant and several firefighters clearing debris on top of the roof.
Police shut down the westbound side of University Avenue between Harbinson and Massachusetts avenues while crews with Heartland and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department worked to subdue the flames. One lane was reopened by early afternoon.
No one was injured. The restaurant is likely to be closed for repairs for at least a month, Casey said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
