First LNG-Powered Containership is NASSCO’s 100th ship launch
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The NASSCO Shipyard launched it’s 100th ship and the world’s first LNG-Powered Containership Saturday night.
The Navy contractor launched the Isla Bella.
It’s the first containership to run on liquid natural gas or LNG.
LNG ships have better fuel efficiency and use a different water treatment system, making them the greenest ships of their size.
NASSCO has been building ships for more than 50 years and this launch also marked another milestone for the company.
The 15,000 ton ship stretches over two and a half football fields and falls just 100 feet short of the Titanic.
