Former Charger Ryan Mathews signs with Eagles

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – San Diego Chargers free agent running back Ryan Mathews signed with the Philadelphia Eagles Wednesday, ending a five-year tenure with the team that made him the 12th overall pick in 2010 NFL Draft.

The contract is expected to be for three years and $11.5 million with $5 million guaranteed.

The Chargers moved up sixteen spots in a draft day trade with the Miami Dolphins to select Mathews out of Fresno State, making him the second running back taken at that point in the draft. Injuries took their toll on Mathews during his time in San Diego, as he played a full 16-game season only once in his time as a Charger. His best season came in 2013, where he logged 285 carries for 1,255 yards and 6 touchdowns, making the Pro Bowl for the first time.

In five years with the Chargers, Mathews ran for 4,061 yards and 23 touchdowns, and added 146 receptions for 1,110 yards and one touchdown.
