Former Senator Waddie Deddeh dies at the age of 99

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – One of California’s longest serving state senators Wadie Deddeh has died.

Originally born in Iraq, Deddeh was the first Iraqi-American elected official in the U.S. and is known for being called the “Father of Caltrans.”

He served 16 years in the on the Revenue and Taxation Committee and 11 years in the State Senate.

Deddeh passed away in his Poway home Tuesday. He was 99 years old.
