Freelance videographer Eric Addison on impact of gig worker bill AB 5

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A Los Angeles federal judge denied a request this week to exempt freelance journalists and photographers from Assembly Bill 5, a new law that makes independent contractors employees.

It’s the new law that requires independent and contract workers to be considered employees of a company, rather than independent workers.

Independent workers say California lawmakers, like Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez-Fletcher who authored the bill, didn’t consider the negative impacts when working to get the law approved. They say this new bill is costing them their jobs.

Eric Addison is a freelancer and independent contractor in video editing and production. He also hires other freelancers/contractors. He was in studio to discuss how AB 5 is causing him and others like him to lose most, if not all, of their jobs.
